In April 2006, a friend and I went to Europe to research the movements of The Fourth Cavalry Group and stand where the Troopers of the 4th and 24th Squadrons fought for our freedom. We flew into Paris-DeGaulle Airport, rented a car, and were on our way. In seven days, we logged over 1,200 km on the odometer.
Our itinerary included planned stops at the Pegasus Bridge, Normandy, Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, three American Cemeteries, the Ardennes Forest. Most important, our trip included a stop to the exact spot where the message was given to start D-Day.
We were fortunate to have befriended two people prior to our trip. The first gentleman, from France, organized our trip to where the Fourth Cavalry Group first touched French soil on D-Day, cross channel. The second gentleman, a Belgian, took a day off work to escort us through the Ardennes, and Germany. A long time friend of my girlfriend, who lives near Liege, Belgium, was our interpeter while in Belgium.
